Like an echo from a close past, it was officially announced today that Mega Man Legends 3 has been cancelled. This includes the Prototype version that was originally supposed to launch alongside the 3DS's eShop.

This comes as quite a surprise to many, especially since this project had been aiming from the beginning to involve the fan base. While updates on that front had slowed down a bit lately, it could have easily being justified by the work required for E3 alongside preparations for the launch of the Prototype.

Where does this leave the future of Mega Man games? As you can tell from looking at the current list of release dates, nothing is currently known outside of merchandise and books. The upcoming Tokyo Game Show 2011, from September 15 to 18, could shed some light on what to expect for the future.
