I really want to work on a good hack, possibly with lots of custom graphics and music. I don't want to do a new story, but rather, something like a demoscene style demo. What if the game really pushed the limits of the NES? That would take a bit of ASM programming to accomplish, but how much? Since RM4 has all the main features of the series (slide, charge, and all 3 Rush adapters), it seems prime for such a display.

Some modification ideas would be recent (electronica) music redone in NSF, adaptation of GBA sprites, new and creative levels, etc. I want to see another game added to the handful of decent Rockman hacks, instead of another minor modification that adds the word "gay" in funny places. Anybody who has played any number of rom hacks knows what I'm talking about.

The most difficult thing in such a project would be to figure out how the data is regrouped within the ROM. While games such as Super Mario Bros. 1 and Dragon Warrior (1) have been torn apart, Mega Man 4 doesn't have quite as many docs available for it.

As a starting point, I know that a level editor for the game is available. If the source code of that software can be downloaded, you could try browsing through it to see how it manages the data of the game. The software might come with some useful information in an attached file. As an extra step, you could contact the author of the level editor in case he knows more than he made available online.

Yeah, I found an editor, so level redesign shouldn't be hard. I haven't played with it a lot, but I know I could at least do new levels with it. I'm gonna need to look into the custom graphics insertion and music replacement, though. Still, I'm considering what you said about it not being dissected as much as other games. Which of the series would you say would be the easiest to modify, given what's been discovered so far?

That would probably be Mega Man 1, since it's much more simple than the others; and Mega Man 2, being the fan favorite and all. Of course both of these lack the later features of the series (slide, charge shot, ...), so you might want to stick with Mega Man 4 anyway.

To be honest with you, Megaman 2 is not my favorite. I know it is people's favorite. I do not know why it is people's favorite and it is not to m opinion.

My favorite of all time is Rockman 8 because of fmv and 32bits and Rockman & Forte because you are able to play Forte and beauitful graphic for snes version familiar to psx.. almost. :)

I'm having fun with this... Maybe I could use this type of thing at a midpoint for if the player takes the wrong path.

I really do love Mega Man 2, because it has awsome music. However, Mega Man 5 is my favorite of the original games.

I guess that's my 2 cents. :D

I'm a Mega Man nut... I own them all, and have them in a lighted display case to boot.
(Excluding the Battlenetwork series...which I detest.)
